The gear shift lever on my outboard wont move. I'm pretty sure the two O rings that seal the nylon? shaft in the upper leg casing have perished. I cannot withdraw the lever, having stripped the engine to the point where this should be possible.

Any good, non-destructive, ideas for shifting O rings that seem stuck to the metal tube ?

The work around is, and has been, to jam it in gear so its still usable.

Or its trapped by corrosion of the aluminium through which it passes.

There is a good chance you will have to drill it out ... but check that you can get a replacement before you do that.

I think later they were modified to permit regular greasing via a grease nipple.

I did not realise they were not all metal!

Thanks VicS, drilling was about where I'd got to but thought I'd ask first. I'll certainly be sure to have a replacement in my grubby mitt before doing that though.

I dont think its corrosion within the tube; partly because the surrounding areas are uncorroded, its been soaked in boiling water/freeing oil/cleaners and heated (till I realised the shaft wasnt metal), and I can get about a 1/6 turn to and fro by gripping both ends. Still cant withdraw the bl**dy thing though.

btw the only metal on my shift lever is in grafted into the area where the spring detent sits.
