My Yamaha 3.5 has bit the dust, as soon as I open up the fuel cock fuel pours out of a small hole in the carbureter bowl.
My club mates say that the hole is supposed to be there but dont know why the fuel is spilling out , can anyone help?

I had same problem, it was as Dave says a sticking float. Took the carb off, cleaned the float chamber, problem went away. Maybe caused by residue of 2 stroke oil.

Do you shut off/disconnect the fuel line when you are not going to use the outboard for some time and let it stop of its own accord when the fuel in the carburettor has run out?

If the fuel needle valve in the float chamber is worn or muck is attached to it.

It cannot do its job and fuel will piddle out said orofice.

Once you,ve cleaned the bits and reassembled to check if the needle is shutting off, before sticking the float chamber back on blow down the fuel inlet pipe whilst raising the float assembly slightly until your puff won,t puff down the hole.
If your puff is stops puffing when you raise the assembly you,ve a good idea that the needle is seating in its home.
If not maybe the tip is worn or gone bluntish in which case you,l still have a piddle and need a new needle!
