Kids returned my previously faultless Yam 2hp and Avon to me under oars the other week. So after usual diagnostic proceedures, mainly trying tro get one of them to accept responsibility for doing something stupid or irresponsible or both, I settled down to check carb and sparks fuel flow etc etc.
Nothing would get it to run properly although it would just start if pulled hard enough, had to be fuel I thought.
Took it home in the end and still couldnt find anything wrong... In the end in the absence of any other possibility I thought I would take a look at the reed valve ( which lives between the carb and crankcase, as Ive had these go on Karts before.
Took 10 mins to get off and would you believe a tiny piece of plastic off the little choke switch ( approx 1mm sq) had managed to break off go thro the carb and jam the reed valve open. Took 10 mins to put back together and all runs sweetly again. Dont you just love problems like this that cost nothing!
Potentially this cud happen on any reed valve engine but I suspect that it was pure fluke that this bit was just the right size to get stuck.
I was just thinking about getting the Seagull out from its dark corner again... Oh God please not that!
Nick.
