Yamaha 2hp outboard cooling

Putting my yamaha away for the winter I have discovered that there is no cooling water exiting with the exhaust. The manual just says: don't run it - take it to a dealer, and offers no other help. As far as I know the cooling water was exiting fine last time I used it. The entry holes for the water are not blocked, nor the exhaust. The engine is only 3 years old and has run fine until now. Any suggestions??

I would suggest you get some fairly thin flexible wire and poke it up the tell tale hole. Almost certainly it will be in that area that it's blocked. If that doesn't work then try turning the engine upside down and with a syringe inject warm soapy water into the same hole. These two methods have always worked for me.

Make sure that you then give it a good flush through with fresh water.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, yes I've seen the article now, but their response is send it to the dealer - maybe I'll have to do that in the end.

Hi, I had a similar problem with a Mariner 5 h/power. I stuck a thin screw driver up the water exit hole and it sorted the problem.

It's best to try and flush the engine before laying it up for the winter.
