Hi

Im trying to change the impeller on this outboard. Ive got as far as undoing the two small bolts holding the impeller cover on and can lift up the cover a small amount but I cannot get the cover over the metal rod which turns the gears. Is there a small scew or bolt holding this rod onto the gears or should the impeller cover slide up over this rod. Ive done a 4hp and that just pulls up.

Thanks

The drive shaft is retained in the pinion by a circlip on the bottom end .

You should be able to find an exploded diagram HERE

Id expect to be able to slide the cover up the drive shaft.
A bit of a nuisance if you have to get inside the gearbox to release the shaft and remove it.

Shaft not in two parts is it ???

Looked at the shaft it will have to come off as the top end is squared off not splined.
It looks like i will have to get at the circlip

Vic is correct, you have disconnected the bottom end / gear box from the head - did the copper cooling tube stay in the head ? You need to drop out the output shaft from the gear box and once this is out you can see the bevel gear on the input shaft. on top of this is a C clip - use a screwdriver to remove this then you can remove the two bolts holding on the waterpump housing. Then lift out the whole assembly. Look out for the spacing shims below the bevel gear - you will need these on reassembly. When you put this back together you have to have the bevel gear in place as you slide in the shaft - otherwise you can't fit it afterwards.
