I’m trying to get a yakker nmea/wifi bridge to transmit the ais data out of my b&g v50 radio. The nmea debug screen just shows gibberish.

The radio outputs nmea on an rs422 port at 38400 or 4800. I’ve tried both speeds,
changing the baud at both ends, but still no luck.

I’m definitely connecting the correct ‘black’ rs422 out+ wire from the radio to the yakker.

Any suggestions?

Try using the RS232 output instead of RS422. RS422 uses a differential signal whereas RS232 uses a positive and ground. The yakker only has a positive signal input and shares the signal ground with 0V so may not be reading RS422 data correctly. You should use 38400 baud rate for AIS, as 4800 is too slow and you will lose data.

It seems common for consumer devices with NMEA 0183 to not implement the electrical part properly with differential signalling, but instead use a +ve and 0V, presumably because it is cheaper and simpler to do so. It will often work ok, but if a device is particularly fussy there might be glitches.

Thanks for the reply. I did try the rs232 and the output was less gibberish but still not nmea sentences.

I did have a similar problem with the Yakker wifi gateway. I am fairly sure it was to do with baud rates not being matched / set properly, but I can’t remember for sure.

Do you definitely have the ground on the Yakker connected to the ground on the B&G?
