I've been sailing for twenty years, about 15000m, most of it single-handed. I've just been offered a job as a yachtbroker, which requires me to have a bit of paper to satisfy the numpties, so I will have to take the yachtmaster exam. Unfortunately all the courses here on the Med that are close to home are entirely geared up for motorboat drivers, and even the examiners only know how to drive motorboats. I have never driven a motorboat before - if I just rock up and do the practical exam on one what difficulties might I expect? Is this a bad idea?

I did my yachtmaster fairly recently and i believe the deal is:

the qualifying passages for the yachtmaster (2x 60 mile as skipper) are the same for the power and you would have to have before you do anything have 2500 of power miles.

As you seem to be fairly experienced under sail I would do a sail yachtmaster and then if you wished to later do a conversion course.

Probably no use to you in this context but I heard of a case where a YM candidate took the exam in a motor-sailer and was told it only entitled him to a powerboat certificate.
