I'm restoring a dinghy and have fitted a new deck. The marine ply is a touch light for my taste. I was going to stain it but some epoxy resin soaked into odd places and trying a scrap piece of ply I can see that stain takes to epoxy differently. I have since sealed the ply with epoxy so at least I have an even coloured base.
I understand that some yacht varnishes tend towards deeper tones than others. Does anyone have any recommendations for a darker toned varnish. I'm not sure about coloured varnishes as they seem to interfere with the natural woodgrain effect.
Don't suggest not using epoxy. It is done now.

I've used Epiphanes varnish, which has lots of anti uv bits and is quite dark toned. In my experience you get what you pay for (tho' not in direct proportion, unfortunately). This year I'm trying their microporous stuff, can't remember the name, but its not been on long enough to say how good it is.

problem with coloured varnishes is that a scratch shows up the unstained colour underneath more - so it all looks more battered more quickly
