"Yacht varnish";- Trading Standards response

Re: \"Yacht varnish\";- Trading Standards response

"Weather shield" is a bit misleading. Obviously nobody reading the term could possibly imagine it had anything to do with being able to withstand the weather - I thought it was a kind of washable poster paint for children.

To be fair to International I think that they market Toplac as suitable for topsides...certainly when I looked into this I did a bit of research and was clearly advised that 'Brightside' would not be suitable for deck or hull finishing.

I think the problem is that all these people are so busy talking up their products that it tends to make'em sound like any of 'em will be good for any application.

I am stripping and re varnishing my cabin interior over the winter and on reading the lable saw that Blakes recommend that the 1st 2 coats should be their Dura Gloss and then finish with 3 or so of Satin finish....'phaa' I thought ...just trying to get me to buy 2 tins instead of 1 so did the job after stripping the wood back to bare surface etc using just the Satin......Of course I had to call Blakes to check something else and the very nice chap in teck support tells me ...Ah well I hope you did the 1st coats in gloss as the Satins has a less good bond and you may find problems in the future!!! Trouble was that I had'nt bothered to read the tin.

Ah well live n learn..
