We had a good experience last year with Matt Willis based in Rhu Welcome To MW Marine Surveys. The survey report was detailed and he was happy to spend time talking us through it.

Also used Matt. After purchase I found two previous surveys in the boats papers (from different surveyors) and whist some of the stuff matt raised was in there some was not (but probably was like that for at least one of them). One of the other surveyors had devoted a lot of attention (i.e. space in the report) to the age and condition of fire extinguishers, which matt managed to do with one line! When matt was writing the report he spotted something which looked odd in one of the photos and thought he'd missed something, he arranged with the broker directly to go back and revisit the boat (at no extra cost to us) to confirm if it was a real problem (as it happened it wasn't it was a lighting problem in the pic). Matt also provided some helpful info for us to check during sea trials.

For some reason this thread keeps appearing when people are searching for a surveyor in Scotland, so I hope you will excuse me throwing my hat in the ring.
