Yacht sinks off Cape Brett, Bay of Islands NZ

Google this which happened yesterday.
NZ Herald described conditions as choppy-more like severe storm
The owner died and his wife is in a serious condition.
I know the Bay of Islands and I was surprised how bad it was as I had heard nothing from my daughter in Kerikeri.

There's a link - pretty big seas. Interesting though, the yacht was over 40ft, can conditions like that just overwhelm a boat, even a large one, and sink it? Or maybe the rudder went or they hit something?

Bay of Islands can get quite nasty in its own right, but this was 40 km off Cape Brett, which puts you out in the Pacific away from any protection. It looks like they got hit by a weather system that went across the top of the North Island.
