The KNRM savers took 11 Danes out of their life raft last afternoon, after their ship sank seven miles west of Zandvoort.
After alerting the Coastguard, the lifeboats of KNRM IJMuiden, Zandvoort and Noordwijk are referring to the message 'vessel makes water'. The lifeboat Nh1816 was the first on the spot and found a life raft in which 11 Danes were in the age between 20 and 60 years old. The passengers had to leave their ship at the moment that it sank after a storm. The ship was under sail from Den Helder to Zeebrugge.
The medic of the SAR helicopter landed on board the liferaft and was taken aboard the lifeboat with the rescued. Then the lifeboat with the rescuers was steamed to IJmuiden. There the people are taken care of in the crew quarters. They have been put in the shower, provided with dry clothing, food and contacts have been made to provide further shelter.
They did well according to circumstances. There was less than an hour between the report and the moment the passengers were rescued.
The lifeboats of Noordwijk and Zandvoort, after the IJmuiden lifeboat with the rescuers left the area, searched for things that floated to the surface after the sinking of the historic ship.
Two helicopters, a ship from the Coast Guard, a pilot boat and three KNRM boats were deployed for the rescue operation.
