Since I don't fancy the Bay of Biscay in December/January, has anyone got any suggestions/recomendations/personal experiences of road transporters for moving a 50ft, 7.5t sailing yacht from Belgium to Barcelona?

Thanks!

For what it is worth, there is a yacht transport ship which runs from Cherbourg to Toulon on a regular basis.

Peters do boat transport by ship from Portsmouth to Palma de Mallorca. I think that this is better and cheaper option for a 50ft boat that road transport. You can later sail from Palma to Barcelona

Blimey - 50' and 7.5 tonne, must be a racer or ex racer! We displace almost 20 tonnes more than that (albeit with close to 3 tonnes of fuel and water).

Do it by ship if possible, if she is as racy as sounds arranging the escorts for overwidth loads will be a real bind. And then you will have an 80 or 90 foot mast to pack carefully, and maybe keel and rudder to remove and refit. You might have sailed the trip in less time than it takes to finish loading!

Hi Mike

I live and work in Port Vell, Barcelona - big orange sign over the Cervesaria - thats me .. (actually now a blue sign we changed it on Monday..)

I probably wont keep her there but up the coast or in one of the 2 other clubs as I hear that getting a berth in PV is difficult.

cheers!

Yep, She's an old Open 50.. - class honours in the STAR and the Route du Ruhm a few years back ... Now thats a fun singlehander!

First quote by road is 4.5K GBP +VAT (ouch!) including escort as she is over 4m, I am going to look at the ship idea.
