I’ve got to re-register my yacht, currently registered under the SSR. As I about to go long distance cruising, hopefully warm places. Is there any advantage is re-resigning my yacht under “Part 1 registration” and what are the advantages

Thanks

Peter

I'm about to do the same (was Part 1, but I was overseas when the new rules came out)

There is a chance that a foreign official will not understand the SSR, but since most registers of merchant ships are modelled on the Part 1 of the 1894 Merchant Shipping Act it looks familiar to all, so anyone can understand it.

Other than that, the only benefit is if you want a mortgage on the boat...

Also, Part 1 is proof of ownership, whereas SSR isn't. That can be useful for your own peace of mind, but also if you ever want to sell it should make the sale easier.

well...speaking from dover coastguard....( although i have not been here that long) (and an obvious name dropper)if there is any changes to your registration then it would be a good move to do it. we are not the only people that read the miles of info supplied by .....us yachty's. have a great time on your trip and a safe watch to you.

always has to be someone who challenges another persons views.updating YOUR YACHT INFORMATION is what iwas talking about...and you SHOULD do it. just updating part 1 is another thing. if your going to update...DO IT ALL. make sure that you are known to the rescue services.and not just the buyer of your boat. traveling around the world would be a wonderful thing to do.......if done safely.

I read the above and thought, um, wonder if I need to get Part 1 instead. Hence the question. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Probably more trouble than it is worth, outside Marlboro Country

Part 1 registration requires a complete chain of title.

So you would need either

(a) a Builder's Certificate and Bills of Sale from each owner

or

(b) if she was part one registered before, Bills of Sale from each subsequent owner, plus a re-survey.

Anywhere in Europe or the States you should be fine with SSR.

Only once you get deep into what the professional mariner calls "Marlboro Country" (where every transaction with authority requires a carton of 200 Marlboro cigarettes) dio things get iffy.

Re: Probably more trouble than it is worth, outside Marlboro Country

Any where in the world you will be fine with an SSR certificate.

Every country in the world has a different form of registry certificate. There is no possible reason to think that the small bit of encapsulated paper of the SSR is any more impressive than the slightly larger bit encapsulated paper of the Part 1 registration. Nobody in a foreign land cares...

The other reasons for having part 1 have already been mentioned.
