Sailing noteworthies in France have noted a distinct fall in public interest in yacht racing because there are simply too many now to allow focus. It appears that sponsors are beginning to take the same view.

Maybe races should now be organized with lots of passages close to shore to stimulate enthusiasm. I suggested before a race/rally up the Irish sea into a few loughs eg Strangford to really test sailing ability, through the Hebrides around the north coast and back though the Caledonian canal. Start and finish at say Iles of Scilly?

I've always found that organising yacht racing close to shore (shallow water) or in confined spaces (loughs) is a recipe for disaster as your average racing yachts person hasn't got enough brain cells to register 0.0001 on the richter scale!

However because most people go to events to see crashes, death and destruction - maybe you're on to a winner! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
