Just discovered this today :D

If you go to the new Eroski that is just over the runway towards the Spanish border they do a free delivery if you spend over £60. We have just done that and they delivered direct to the boat about three hours later. Saved all that hassle with taxis and lugging bags all the way into the marina. Absolutely fantastic....

And cheaper too! It appears that the days when the Spanish came over on their weekly shopping trip are gone.

We were in La Linea/Gib. back in September and I was surprised to discover that shopping at Mercadona (our favourite supermarket) and Carrefour in La Linea was far less expensive than the Morrison Store in Gib - On a Saturday afternoon visit to Carrefour, I estimated that over 50% of the cars in their carpark were Gibraltar registered.

For those that want such things, most of those items that might appeal parcticularly to the Gibraltan/ex-pat Brit customers were available in Carrefour too; I think that all we eventually bought in Morrisons were cans of stewing steak, orange squash and some big blocks of Cheddar cheese, the last turning out to be distinctly 'ordinary'.

Given that provisioning is now better/cheaper in La Linea, why not save some money on the mooring fees too? The La Linea marina was cheaper and far better sheltered than Marina Bay and the anchorage just off La Linea Marina's equally well protected and free.

On the few trips I've done to Gib in the last ten years I've found that everyting is more expensive except the ubiquitous "duty free" items like booze and cigarettes. The high end stuff like watches etc., was certainly dearer than even the UK.

I felt I had to respond to this post as most of what you are saying is simply not true.

We have lived, on and off, in Gib for 10 of the last 14 years. My wife victuals several yachts a week and Ive shown her this post. Nonsense. Some lines are cheaper in La Linea, some in Gib. Pretty much balances out. Unless you got a car and are prepared to spend ages in border queues, not worth it. Morrisons and all the petrol stations in Gib are thriving on Spanish customers simply because its cheaper. Weekends are often left with empty shelves because of this.

To claim that moorings are cheaper is wrong too. Published prices in Alcaidesa Marina do not include tax, electricity and water. How do I know...was there Friday night. When you factor in the cost of wifi at 8 euros a day, its actually a bit dearer in La Linea.

The south side of the anchorage is closed ...the most sheltered part. You will be moved.

Its always better to check ones facts prior to posting...........

Last summer, we found the food prices to balance out with some things cheaper in Gib, some cheaper in LaLinea. Morrisons was a waste of time on Mondays and Tuesdays, lots of empty shelves. Shop prices in Gib for things like cameras were around 30% dearer tha UK. Cigs from the bond warehouse were around £1.30/pack but some booze was cheaper in shops, managed to find some Scotch whisky @ £3.25/L:). Will be back this summer, last years supplies getting low.

As said above, when Gib free wi-fi taken into account Marina Bay was almost the same price, IIRC about £1/night more. Ocean Village pontoons a bit dearer. Bad news about the anchorage though, is it permanent or temporary problem? Are the Club and marina still charging people for parking dinghy to go ashore?

Hiya. Regarding the anchorage, its permanent. Big signs all around and enforced by our friendly Guardia. Supposedly, some Russian wonga will be turning that area into a superyacht berthing marina.

Not sure about dinghy charges though.

Hi
I agree Generally its more expensive than Spain except for cigs spirits and diesel. You can still anchor a little to the west. Yes they are still charging 5 euros at the boat club to leave your dinghy

I hope things have changed a bit on another aspect in Gib. We were warned to never take cartons or other boxes on the boat. Because they were invariably infested with cockroach eggs. Something you really do not want to find out later.

Jim B is quite right. It's by no means a problem specific to Gib. Anywhere warm and cardboard does not go aboard.

Ouch; aren't I a naughty boy.

My apologies to capnsensible, for the offence which I’ve clearly caused in holding opinions that differ from his facts and I can only hope that my response doesn’t upset him further:

I can only report based upon my own experiences, though having spent a number of years travelling to often obscure places, relying primarily on the information gleaned from others ‘coming in the opposite direction’, I’ve long realised that ‘facts’ can change and often rapidly: As an example: There were certainly no restrictions on anchoring in La Linea, during our visited of September 2012, if that has subsequently changed then c’est la vie..; my gratitude to capnsensible for the more recent/updated information.

To this end, I report only opinions/experiences not ‘facts’ and invariably include an indication as to how recent my information/experience is, in any post that I make and I appreciate others who do the same. As a rule of thumb, I’ve found that the more recent an item of information is, the stronger the likelihood of it remaining 100% correct.

The alternative is that we only post about places which we’ve visited in the last few days/hours or in which we’re permanently resident; though this would not only drastically reduce the range/extent of the information available but probably skew the result too: Based upon my own experience once again, I have on more than one occasion found and for a variety of reasons, that the advocation (is that a word?) of one town/harbour over its near and competing neighbours by a local ‘resident’, whilst useful and of interest, is not necessarily the most impartial.

None of the foregoing is presented as‘fact’ merely an opinion, based upon personal experience

Apology accepted. I am sure that you understand that as regular visitors many times each year to the 22 ports and harbours in our pilot book we have extensive experience of these places. We are always very keen to hear from people on their travels so we can continually update the pilot to reflect the very latest information.

The compilation of such a pilot guide helps to prevent heresay being offered as fact and any contributions you may have for the 2014 edition will be welcomed.

Having sailed into 10 of these ports myself in the last 21 days, I have already found one or two updates.

Look forward to hearing from you, CS.
