Now I am thinking of buying a secondhand (bigger) yacht. My current Bav42cc is great but it has just two double berths and my friends (blokes!!!) do not like bunking up together in the front v berth. Can't say I blame them!!!

Anyway, I have crawled all over loads of boats around the solent boatyards over the past 6 months but what is impossible to assess is how well they all sail. I looked at Moodys. Trouble is I have two friends whose views on a 46' Moody are diametrically opposed. One says they are wonderfull, and the other says it is a caravan and has awfull weatherhelm.

I thought of asking someone from the Moody owners club but I reckon I am unlikely to find someone who is unbiased. The question is what do you reckon would be the best allround yacht of around 44' - 46' mark. Around 7 - 10 years old... What are Moodys like to sail?

Any views, Any good / bad experiences?

I have a Moody 44 which has the same layout as the 46, although not as spacious. Apart from length, one of the main reasons that is not so spacious, is that it has a much finer entry up forward and consequently goes better (I overtook a 46 quite easily in the RTIR 2 years ago).

My father has a Dehler 41DS, which is considered quite spritely and I generally outpace that and he is not a slow sailor, having owned racing yachts for over 25 years (although it has a bowthruster which may slow it down a bit).

There is quite a balanced review by BWS.

Moody 44 Passage Review

Other than that you could look at the usual JenBen Bav brigade.

That is very interesting. I went to look over a Moody 46 and thought the forward deck was very wide. Not a slim boat at all. I am not surprised you overtook a 46. I suspect I might leave that model and look further afield. Thanks for the link. Very interesting. Any views on Halberg 45s. I might check that route out too...

Having said all that, the Yachting World review of the 46 was very positive about her sailing characteristics, but it was blowing quite well (>25knots) for the review.

I overtook 2 Moody 46s to windward in last years RTIR - in my 36ft ong keeled ketch (disp 8.5 tons on 27ft LWL), and I'm no Ben Ainslie!!!

Hmmm The 46 is beginning to sound like a bit of a slow coach!!! I am definetly going to look elsewhere... Thanks for the info.

In the above mentioned test they said it would happily do 8 to 9 knots on a reach.

It's just the windward bit that suffers, so it's only a slow coach to windward, which is a characteristic of many high volume modern boats.

Don't know the big HRs well, but as a generic comment, big cruisey boats are often designed below for small crews, so not a surfeit of separate bunks - more space for the fornicatorium sort of thing. Racey boats (or charter cruisers) are expected to have a rugby team aboard, and therefore there are bunks left, right and centre.

This, of course has to be taken into account!!! A definite plus when the chandelier may be succesfully strung up!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Yacht performance...? What is your view?

Hmmm again... Well I don't know quite what to think. Is the Yachting World review online? The other thing is I get a little cautious of are reviews since they never really take a serious pot shot at the reviewed boat (I guess the manufacturer is paying for advertising after all!!!).

I suspect the only real answer is to go for a test sail. (Not in January though - brrrr - too cold for that! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif)

Re: Yacht performance...? What is your view?

My only experience of a Moody was on an Instructor course. Bare feet were OK on deck but needed wellies down below as shallow bilge could not be pumped dry and carpets were permanently saturated. Oh yes, and the engine starter packed up which wasn't a problem as we could all sail, but as time went on and the batteries drained we started to dehydrate - the only access to the water in the tanks was by an electric pump.

Needless to say I was not impressed, no drinking water despite near full tanks and too much salt water in the carpets. Hope the ones you looked at are better fitted out.

Comfort at sea comes very high on my performance requirements.

Re: Yacht performance...? What is your view?

This sounds like a badly maintained boat, not a Moody problem. Surprised that it has shallow bilges as mine has a big sump that is 2 feet below the floorboards.
