Hi all

Does a vessel registered with an SSR number need to have a unique name? If so, how does one tell if changing the name of a boat whether the name is already in use. Is there somewhere online where it can be checked?

Thanks

Gavin

A word of caution, although a yacht on the Part 3 (SSR) register does not have to have a unique name, you cannot use a name which is registered against a boat on the Part 1 Register, since those names have to be unique. Thus for example you can find several boats called 'Imagine' on the Part 3 register since no one uses it on the Part 1 register. On the other hand, since 'Solent Privateer' is used on the Part 1 register no one else can use it for a UK registered yacht.
If you want to see a list of names go to
www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/mars/ship_search.sh#start
I hope I have that right, but if you get any problems you can get to it through the itu.int main site. It is the Mars data base and contains the names of all ships and yachts registered worldwide. You enter the name you want to use and the database will come back with all boats of that name and variations such as Bluebell of Hamble. The only slight problem with the database is that it is only updated at six month intervals.

Caution.

The ITU list is of vessels which have licensed comms equipment aboard.

Just because 'Pigs Trotter of Port Rush' doesn't appear on the ITU list, it doesn't mean that there isn't one out there somewhere, either unradioed, or whose owner has 'forgotten' to apply for a radio licence.

Can't access the ITU site at the moment to check but will try later. Who's responsibility is it to check this? I've just sent off my SSR forms with the new name so will this be rejected if the name exists on the Part 1 register? Assuming not all people have web access is it a trial and error process to find a name that doesn't exist?

Thanks

Gavin
