Yacht Importation

I have contacted Customs and Excise with regard to importing a yacht into the UK from outside of the EU. I have been advised that even if I initialy import the yacht into another EU country (with a lower VAT rate), then VAT will still be due at the FULL VAT rate of 17.5% on subsequent importation into the UK. I think they are telling me fibs. Does anyone else have any experience or advice on this? The yacht was built in the EU, so RCD compliance is no problem.

Seems to be true, we have the same case in France.
