I have just completed a delivery of a Beneteau 393 from Turkey to Gosport as part of a PYD crew. This was not a pleasure cruise at over 3000 miles, 35 days and winds on the nose for much of the time. But it was well-organized, safe and an overall good experience. With a 3-person delivery you need to be able to keep a night watch alone, cook at sea and have a passing knowledge of navigation. Crewing is generally not paid but a good company will cover travel costs, fuel, berthing and food. Recommended as a way to see the world, acquire miles, practice your celestial navigation skills and generally get sailing at someone else's expense. More on my Blog

We visited some lesser known ports for refueling - Muxia (Galicea) San Jose (Spain) Sines (Portugal) - all useful and interesting stops.

Nothing wrong with that, it's a great experience and cheaper than paying to sail.

Indeed so. A friend has had some superb trips, out to the Azores and Canaries all free. Once you have proved yourself it seems there can be more offers. A couple of years ago we came across a delivery fleet for Sailing Holidays, from Sivota to the Aegean. They were about to transit the Corinth Canal, a great experience. In their case not free but far cheaper than would be the case for a normal flotilla.

I have just completed a delivery trip after a request for help on here. Without going into any detail, he didn't thank me. (or others who had helped before me). In fact as we were reaching his final destination today he told me that he knew that no one was doing it to help but for their own personal benefit... I have my own yacht, I have thousands of miles under my belt and I have plenty of friends to go sailing with. I did it in the spirit of helping another. I found his comment particularly offensive as the trip cost me five days out of my life and money (I didn't ask for any expenses). I suppose that is just a lesson in life...

On a nicer note, the Flot Leader with Sailing Holidays was probably my boy, he did a few of those trips. Not a bad way to make a living!!!

A delivery company that shall not be named advertised recently that they needed people to crew, (unpaid but thats pretty standard) after enquiring I was told that I'd have to pay a £20 'administration fee'. Needless I won't be crewing for them!
