Having just moved to the UK from Geneva, I'm looking to join a yacht club on the South Coast. The RAF Yacht Club accepts applications from civilians and from their web site they look and sound like they have good facilities and ethos. Does anyone have any feedback on them, or any others in Hamble/Southampton area?

Done quite a bit of sailing from the RAF. (not a member though) facilities are good, the beer is cheap and the people friendly.

Dunno what else you'd want really!?

As others have said, it depends on what you want from your club, but I am a member of the RAFYC and I can confirm that although the name suggests that it may be very military, that certainly isn't the case. Indeed, the vast majority of the members I have met are just keen sailors who also enjoy a good party (pretty much like any other yacht club really). Come along and have a look for yourself.

The Royal Southampton YC is worth thinking about. They have lots of social activities, plenty of racing and cruising, and you get two club houses for the price of one membership!

RSYC

It all depends on your budget of course, but I've got friends at Royal Southampton and Royal Southern and have visited both more than once. Both are friendly with great facilities. I'd say RSrn is more top end race orientated whilst the crusing side of RS is probably a little better. Far less gillets at RS.

Certainly check out the RAFYC: a really friendly mix of unassuming retired services people and civillians (probably the majority now) from widely different backgrounds; a good range of cruising, racing, social and family activities; a great location right in Hamble Village; very good facilities (bar, restaurant, accommodation, water-front, storage, etc); neither expensive nor exclusive; a lot of fresh investment over recent years - gets my vote.

Tim (I've no idea in all honesty)

Something to think about is how much time are you going to spend there. If all you are doing is dashing down to the Hamble and heading off somewhere straight away, then when you return jumping straight in the car to go back to London, you might be better joining a club at one of your destinations or even back in London. You will get more use out of it and the reciprocal membership will let you visit the Hamble/Southampton clubs on the few odd occasions should you want to.
