I am considering a bareboat yacht charter in Gocek this summer as its relatively cheap and would be grateful for any advice from people with experience of this area. Will be going with my girlfriend and we would like somewhere with a variety of small local harbours/fishing villages, not too touristy and bays to anchor in. Does Gocek sound like the right place or does anyone have any better suggestions.....we really enjoyed Croatia a few yrs ago. Thanks.

Lots of bays, but not Harbours or fishing villages. Gocek itself is very nice, but has changed out of all recognition from its fishing village roots. Many local bays have restaurant jetties where you can tie up for the night, and if you are only going for a week its a good base. Distances between local bays are short, but you can always sail out of Skopea Limani, which is a body of water almost enclosed by a headland and islands, and come back again to a different bay each evening. If starting from Gocek do not miss a trip to Gemiller Adasi, where you can go ashore (fee charged) to visit the ruins.

I chartered from Gocek in 2007, from Ecker Yachting. Liked it so much, we now have our own yacht based at Fethiye, just along the coast. The local area - Bay of 12 Islands - would ideally match your requirements. Ecker Yachting is a German company but I never found language aproblem, at any stage. There are several other charter companies in Fethiye, including Sunsail.Tere are lots of British liveaboard yachts in the area and this is always a good sign. Try www.eckeryachting.com

Ecker are actually Austrian, another company to consider is Suncharter, who are German. They look after their boats very well. Smallest boat they have at Gocek is likely to be a 36 foot Jeanneau, which should be fine for two.
Their website is here although the English language part of the site is having trouble at the moment, you will have no language difficulties dealing with them.

I can recommend Top Yacht who have a base in Gocek and have always provided us with excellent boats over the 6 or eight years we have used them.

However, Gocek is now rather commercialised and we prefer chartering from Keci Buku in the Gulf of Hisaronu, North of Marmaris. Its not quite as busy and there is a bigger variety of places to go. You could do a one way charter from Keci Buku down to Gocek with Top Yacht and get the best of both areas.

Sailing in Skopea Limani out of Gocek has many similarities to Croatia: it is a superb sailing ground with many beautiful anchorages and great sailing in a sheltered environment. But it also has the one same drawback as Croatia; it is becoming very crowded in season. You will not find any small lovely fishing villages in this area. But great shore side restaurants in almost every bay.

If you are looking for more 'local flavour'; it would probably be better to charter out of Bodrum where you have a choice of going either west into the Greek islands or east into the beautiful bays of Turkey. You will find your 'small local fishing villages' here.

We've been on flotillas in the area with Setsail and have also arranged a bareboat charter out of Gocek through Setsail (excellent company - usual disclaimers). The yacht Setsail arranged for us (Benneteau 331) was managed by Blues Yachting in Gocek and it might be worth getting in touch with them direct.

Love the area. Lots of 'one restaurant' bays within a week's sailing - huge number within two week's range. People extremenly friendly and usually help you to moor, which is useful if you're short handed.

Only drawback from our point of view is that it can be difficult to find somewhere to anchor for lunch because most of the small bays are taken by gulets.

In a week you can easily cover the local bays and also to Coldwater Bay in the east and as far west as Asi Koyu, both recommended. In two weeks you could go to (and beyond) Marmaris.

Great area.

Hope you enjoy it as much as us.

Ditto - had an excellent trip with Top Yacht from Keci Buku to Gocek. Well equipped & maintained Dufour 365 and very helpful & friendly staff both ends.

Hi; I am a yacht operator in Göcek. I would like to answer every question in this regard. By the way, do not think about renting only a bareboat in Göcek. You should definitely see the boats called specially made Gulets for the Aegean.

I love Gocek. We've chartered there 3 times with Moorings. The bay of Fethiye is great, with plenty of good anchorages. If you have a bit longer, a trip down to Kekova is well worth it; it's a world heritage site and truly a wonderful place.

In all, one of my favorite sailing grounds. Good sailing conditions, sparkling clean water, and many interesting places to see and visit (the whole of that coastline is like one massive archaeological site). We've always found the Turks to be very friendly and helpful, and the food and drink is good and relatively cheap.

Gocek itself is home to my all time favourite name for a restaurant - Kebab Hospital (I suspect this may originate in a mis-translation of hospitality).

Have a chat with Julian, the guv of Sunscape Yachting. They're based down there and he knows all the ins and outs.

.Another vote in favour - my very first Med charter was with Top Yacht from Gocek. Had an excellent week, covered quite a lot of ground beyond Marmaris and even hopped across to Rhodes for a night in the bars and clubs (we were all young once!)

I’d never visited Turkey before and found all the local people incredibly helpful and friendly
