125 AH Xplorer Deep Cycle Leisure Battery £89.99

Thanks for the link
my batteries are in fact 4 yrs 10 months old & due to fridge probs of recent ( batts run totally flat twice) are not holding a charge so i will replace all 3 domestic`s ( Exrider EX31 from batterymegastore) the engine batt is ok.
i ordered yesterday but had a phone call before close today that their stock del had failed to arrive. Alpha are cheaper (http://www.alpha-batteries.co.uk/marine-batteries/125-ah-xplorerleisure-battery/)so have sent BMS an email asking for a price match.

This has me intrigued. A lead acid cell is 2V so a 6V battery has 3 cells and a 12V battery has 6 cells. How do you make a 3V lead acid battery?

You are right! I had assumed that 8 batteries giving 24v meant each was 3v, but this is not the case. In fact I now know that they are two banks of 4 x 6v (20 hour rated) batteries giving a total of 460 Amp hours. Apparently these Varta deep cycle batteries can be discharged fully.

So if/when I replace these lead acid batteries what should I get to have equal or better performance? AGMs?

Thanks

If you want a quality battery, as I did when replacing recently, go for Varta at the best discount you can find. Not the cheapest but the best value end to end. You are right - the no-names, nod nod wink suppliers are selling to a price and you already know you get only what you pay for.

When replacing your bank stay with the old technology, Trojan T105's are still probably the best solution but..........

It depends totally on you usage and what charging systems you have, I have wind, solar and shore and for many years used Truck batteries which were a great bang for the buck, however the ideal solution is Forklift batteries they come in 2v cells but they are very heavy, (600ah 48kg). I have just changed to T105's so can't judge long term reliability but they appear to be extremely good and all the reports I have had are possitive. (I have worked on many boat systems and all the ones with T105's were very solid on the battery front, it was always other problems)

I bought 2 deep cycle Varta batteries , not for the quality but the dimensions, very restricted space available. After one season the were not charging up fully, contacting the main agents in Glasgow who arranged local collection and testing, took 10 days but were replaced under their 2 year warranty. The new ones so far so good this season.
