Yacht aground on Wolves this afternoon

Yikes, was nearby only yesterday. Glad everyone got home safe.

Makes me appreciate the few minutes it takes to lay down a route around the cardinals in Navionics.

I have - from the first time I started sailing around Weston Bay area - had a gps proximity alarm on the wolves - end of brean down etc. You feel over cautious - and it scares the hell out of me at times as my garmin alarm is re-routed to a 105 decibel piezo buzzer with a latching relay !
If you do mess up at least I know I'm about to mess up.
I sail with someone whos always saying - "Oh there's always water over the Wolves!. I shall send him one of these pics !

That person is very wrong

I also used to keep a proximity waypoint on it interestingly enough, although in practice we never went near it when we had the boat in Cardiff.

Friends, however, bought a plotter because they realised they had sailed over it without knowing!

I remember seeing these exposed last year, around the time of the autumn equinox on a day trip around flat holm from Cardiff. Actually it was the misses who spotted them before me. It is easy not to spot these if your only looking at vector charts on your plotter!

Makes you think of a planing speed boat - at speed - not good.
You can get casual when you do not draw much - any many things are not worth worrying about - but I made the mistake of cutting the corner at W Scar in rough conditions - just W of S Scar - and found myself in a 2.5m swell and 1.5m of water at lowest !
Cardinals are there for a reason !

Absolutely... If I'm aiming to keep on planing speed over any distance, it'd be against a navionics plotted course, taking strong consideration of cardinals.

For a few minutes of d**king around (gotta do some donuts sometimes!), I'd check the chart for my local area to make sure it's clear first.

My main fear whilst planing ain't hitting charted rocks, it's hitting an uncharted fridge at 20+ knots!
