The Invicta 26 which I bought recently was first registered 39 years ago.

She carries the Sail No: 333Y.

Is there a central register where this can be checked. Is it still valid?

I see that all present Nos issued by the RYA are GBRxxxxY - ie 4 figures not three.

My Sabre has the sail no. 166Y,

Was told on here that it was a Clyde number, which is strange cause the boat
spent her life at Tolsbury from new , then Weymouth,

So would be very interested to find out where the " Y " actually does comes from.

'Y' as I understand is a U.K. Sail no. issued mostly in England if your boat came from the Clyde it would have a 'C' Sail no., but not necessarily so as when Sail no's were introduced many Clyde owners opted for a U.K 'Y' no.. I have seen a registar of Sail no's for the Clyde but how accurate it is I do not know.

The 'C' number is issued by Clyde Yacht Clubs Association (CYCA). They will issue this number with a handicap to boats which intend to race in races and regattas organised by constituent clubs.

If your boat has a 'C' sail number, you can check whether this is still recognised by checking here

Re: \"Y\" Sail Number

i think it was issued by the RYA for yachts intending to race that did not have a py number.

Re: \"Y\" Sail Number

Interestingly, I also recently bought an Invicta 26 (mk 11, I believe) with a sail no. 335Y. It was originally registered in Rochester although I haven't kept up the registration, and neither did the previous owner. Is there much point ?

Bob

When you post a link leave out the http:// as this is inserted automatically, otherwise your link won't work.

Re: \"Y\" Sail Number

Thanks Tom. That's why the http was duplicated. I had just copied it off the address line on IE

I'll have to remember that.

A web site was what I was hoping to find.

Re: \"Y\" Sail Number

Thanks, that explains it.

Interesting that the "Clyde" nos are listed on the web but that the RYA don't bother to list the numbers they issue!!

When out sailing, one often sees boats with these numbers and it would be very interesting to see the name and type of boat which could be obtained from such a list. You would only have to print it out and take it with you.

Re: \"Y\" Sail Number

Further to CYCA posting the information on the web, they also produce a Yaer Book, which is issued to all memebers with a handicap, I get mine through the Clyde Cruising Club.

Very handy when 'racing' (you know the situation - out for a pleasant sail and see a boat ahead that you just have to catch...) you can look up the CYCA Book and get its handicap... then you know why it is now just a dot on the horizon - or, conversly, why you overhauled it with a smug look on your face!
