My wee machine said the other day that the only way of getting SP2 was to be on auto d/l and it would put bits on as / when.
If I go into Windows there is a file, notepad, called Windows Update. Things seems to be getting put onto that but does not make a blind bit of sense to this old fart. Will I eventally get all SP2 or is Mr Gates conning me???? If I am going to get it will it come before this laptop needs replacing I wonder - its only 6 months old!!!
Many thanks to the technocrats in advance.

AFAIK SP2 is currently only available to business users, we mere personal users will have to wait. Last I heard it was end of August. I think they're suggesting you turn on automatic update to be certain of getting SP2 as soon as it's available, I doubt that will be the ONLY way to get it.

I plan to keep going to Windows Update until SP2 is generally available for voluntary download from there. From what I'm hearing you'd be well advised to create a full backup before installing SP2, many business users have reported problems with non-Microsoft applications after SP2 install.

I have also heard that Microsoft will allow PC mags to distribute SP2 on their cover CDs, not sure I'd totally trust that though......

The absolute only thing you can be sure of is .... Mr Gates is conning you. Everything else is just theorising.

The current situation, as I understand it to be, is that those who have selected auto update will get SP2 downloaded to them in parts (starting on 19 August, if I recall corrrectly) and for those of us that manually update is available from 25 August - I assume that date is a USA one.

I get prompted when updates are available and SP2 came up a couple of days ago. I have not downloaded it yet as it's 75 - 266MB in size. Anyone on a dial up connection - forget it!!!

One source of the schedule and advice for deployment is http://windowssecrets.com/040819/ (scroll down the page a bit). That site is usually authorative and worth subscribing to if interested.

Smart downloading

SP2 has smartdown loading for those who are on a dial up connection. You can down load it while you are on the web whilst you are working over various sessions. And it knows where it's started / finished eachtime, so it can be downloaded over "x" evenings. (80Meg Download). I think you can also apply for the disk and computing mags will be giving the download away free with mags soon.

They reckon 80% of SP2 is just security features, that previously existed on the previous server pack that no one turned on.

Thanks for this, I'd appreciate any info on your experiences with SP2 installed.

I'm on dial up, and auto update informed me it was available to download a few days ago. Been away for the weekend, so it's only just downloading now, and will do so in chunks in the background without me having to do anything.. There have been a few probs though according to my mates that already have it

I don't think you understand the auto update facility. It's quite advanced and is designed for dial up as well as broadband..It downloads it in the background according to the bandwidth you have, and does it in chunks. If you are on dial up, it will do it over many connections, and once completed will tell you it is ready to install. Might take some days if you dial up infrequently and are not on for long
