Should I ask for an EPIRB 406 or just buy one and ask for something else?

EPIRB is "essential safety equipment" and also benefits other people on your boat, so does not really qulify as a proper present, therfore you should just buy one anyway. Socks on the other hand are not "essential safety equipment" and also don't benefit other people, therefore are the perfect present for the man with everything. You could also ask for some quality hankies with JIMI embroidered on them, or a silver plated picture frame.

SWMBO despairs of me because I have a habit of going out and buying things just before Birthday and Christmas, consequently spoiling her ideas. I am now usually on a retail ban in November and December.

Re: And it was going so well.

In a similar vein, socks with the days of the week on could be construed as safety equipment as at least the MCA would know on which day he 'met his maker' if they did find his corpse.

Obviously if they are just Xmas / reindeer socks then the date of demise can be narrowed down to the Xmas period as nobody wears them after that.

Re: And it was going so well.

Actually I do have a pair of Xmas musical socks I wear all year round. Lasst year one of my mates was 2 steps from the hereafter from mal de mer. As he (st)retched out in the cockpit I repeatedly placed my left ankle close to his ear activating Jingle bells as I did so. He said nuffink at the time but subsequently told me he was so ill he had suffered aural hallucinations of Jingle Bells.. did'nt disillusion him .. will repeat next time .. maybe "God rest ye merry gentlemen" instead though!
