I'm trying to connect the new xm dsc vhf to my Garmin 128 via nmea. It doesn't seem to acknowledge that the gps is connected.
The xm comes with the gps sonnestion of a green and yellow wire, the gps states that the greeen and the yellow spare. \\\\\the Garmin says that the blue and brown connect to the autopilot and I've tried that but to no avail.

Any one tried this combination with success??

help much appreciated

I am having a similar problem with a raymarine 420 plotter and Silva DSC. I didn't connect them so I will have to check te wiring but otherwise there must be a way of turning it on and off. Does anyone know if the DSC VHF will receive a position without an MMSI entered?

Mike,

as i posted to david rather lacking in the set up of electrical equipmenet. can you advise me what to do. It isn't explained in the garmin manual. I wasn't too sure if the 128 would support the dsc.

The answers are in the Garmin manual, http://www.garmin.com/manuals/82_OwnersManual.pdf

Page 44 shows how to set the Garmin's output to NMEA/NMEA.
Page 59 shows how to connect the Garmin to the VHF. Your VHF replaces the box described as "Autopilot/NMEA device". From memory, the XM VHF wires are clearly labelled, but I can't remember their colours.

Do what 'cpedw' says but also make sure you connect the signal grounds of each device together. I had a similar prob with garmin 128, phoned them and the guy said connect the signal gnds, did that and everything fine. you cannot rely on the two devices being connected to the same battery negative.
