I wonder if we could discuss the following sensibly and with input from everybody? Please read whole post before typing a reply.

I know this has been mentioned before so I know I am not the only one who takes great exception to the arrogant and flippant way certain posters SEEM (notice the diplomacy) to enjoy flaming anyone who:

Asks a question that may have been asked before
Is new to the Forum
Appears (again notice possibility for incorrect assumption), to be their intelectual inferior
Dares to have an opinion different to Stalin or Atilla the Hun
Is stupid enough to only visit now and then
or possibly isn't IT literate to Phd standards.

I for one am totally peed off with having virtually every instance of the above ridiculed.

This forum has oft been likened to a pub, in my admittedly small experience of Pub Culture, some of the posts would, if made in a real pub, result in a smack of the mouth. Just because you may be a regular or think you are very important, nothing gives anyone the right to pure rudeness. Many very learned people have left this forum since I joined 'cos of this, their loss is still regrettable.

Banter OK, try reading your posts twice before hitting "continue"!, is it derogatory? Then change it!! If you wouldn't say it to someones face, don't say it, for me, my right hooks been used professionally before now!

My view?? I know I'm not alone in my feelings, PM's from many of the GREAT forumites on here , plus private conversations, testify to that. If you can't educate or help, listen to others points of view , with sensitivity to others possible need for education or help, be prepared to be without them when you may just possibly need there education or help, and you will always be the lessser person for your refusal to listen and offer guidance, not ridicule!

Re: Examples?

Don't disagree - but difficult to evaluate culpability without specific examples. I just must be guilty of this, at some point! Also, it's a bit difficult to establish people's motives etc until you have metem at which point you realise that they are quite harmless. I'm wary of discussing things like this too much cos it mite seem that the whole forum is very rule-ridden. But overall, i spose the effect is an improvement...

Examples please! Don't hold back - most long-termers are a quite bomb-proof. I spect the guilty ones are

1. hlb
2. me
3. um, that's probly it. I bet hlb is worse than me tho, m'lud. heehee. Oops, it's suposed to be serious, ahem, sorry.

A little research tells me that neither of us is guilty of rattling the cage on this occasion.

Re: Examples?

Think he's refering to JFM, who shot-down your pseudo-scientific explaination of why IPS won't work and then told Planty he was talking bollox.

Personally, I didn't think any of it was too harsh, and in pub discussions most of us will accuse our mates of talking bollox if we happen to disagree with them. That isn't necessarily a prelude to a scrap.

Kangeroo Court in Session, and socks

So! Facing the Court this morning is the fact that planty proposed some engineeringly not-very feasible push/pull propellor thing, which jfm shot down in flames by saying it was bollox. Not very nice saying it was bollox I supose BUT unfortunately a bit true, and also he did say "sorry" inadvance of saying it was bollox, really.

However, I think that planty was lured towards the more badly-thought-out fringes of theoretical engineering lunacy and unlikeliness by me! Jfm correctly identified it all as embarassing shite, and sed so not too horridly, altho planty then developed a variation on the theory, whereupon jfm again said it was bollox, again.

I would be a pity if stuff that was wrong was allowed to just go unchecked really. And i don't know how you would say "that's utter bollox! without saying the same. What the heck. Storm in teacup. Ease up planty, it's just a forum. I blame that Tom issit for stirring things up by putting on stuff about boats. Oh, alright, and me as well, but much less. For the very first time ever, hlb is not to blame for any of this. Weird!

Perhaps this is about time forpowerskipper to ask a question about what colour socks we wear when boating. Personally i don't wear ANY socks when boating in the med, but usually black in the uk cos i bought a load of black socks so i only have to pick out 2 socks and they're always a pair.

Re: Examples?

I assume from the title of this thread he's referring to me, the Volvo IPS thread

Planty, I was pretty surprised by the tone of your reply. But in any case, I did not mean to be rude to you and I apologise.

Forums are strange becuase all you get to see is the text, and it's nearly always typed in a hurry (grabbing a few minutes between proper work). If same conversation were in a pub you would have body language and you know if the other person is being offensive. So imho best not to think a post is a carefully written piece. Much better to assume imho that the other person isn't being rude unless it's really really clear he/she is. And always imho believe it when someone lightens a "that's bolx" type attack with a smiley or "I dont mean to be rude" statement, becuase invariably those lighten-uppers are meant sincerely
.
I called tcm's stuff earlier on that thread tosh or something(he was thinking along the same pull/push lines as Planty). He didn't take offence and openly chomped his humble pie. There are zillions of previous exchanges where I have eaten the humble pie. Other posters on the same thread agreed with me that Planty was wrong. It doesn't matter, it's just banter. Come to think of it HLB called me a wanker on here a while back but there was no scrap!

Anyway, no big deal I hope, as I say I apologise to Planty for any offence

Re:Interesting sock question

Interesting (the sock thing). I too subscribed to the "any two black socks make a pair" school of getting dressed, but now Son No1 has feet almost the same size as mine, and Son No2 isn't far behind, so have had to rethink the sock situation. Now have dark-blue socks, while Sons No1 and No2 have black ones, and Son No3 has grey ones.

Except that getting dressed in the dark means that often I will get to work wearing one size 9 blue sock and one size 7 black sock. For boating, it's big wooly ones for the UK, and none for Caribbean or Med.

Which I'm sure you'll agree is very nteresting. Powerskip...thoughts please?

Re:Interesting sock question

What a load of old Volvo Warranty, Tom. Socks aren't sold in sizes like that, you get 'em as size 8-12, or 4-7 and so on. So you are clearly making this up. Except for the bit about the size 7, which I suppose could happen.

Re: Sock suspenders

yep, that's weird that is. Mind you, everyone o the internet is weird, really, so it's better than having an axe.

No, actually, after thinking about this, sock suspenders are really really weird, and everyone is tittering about it. Sorry, Clive. Is it a rule that people called Clive have to wear sock suspenders? If not, praps get rid of them.

Sorry, but if people can't seperate an internet chat room from real life - it's them who have the problem.

Of course I say things on here that I wouldn't say in a pub, that's because I talk more bollox on here, not because I would be worried if someone told me.."my right hooks been used professionally before now!"

I wont read my posts twice to see if I am offending anyone, I save that for where it matters.

I come here for a bit of light relief, fun, laughter and sometimes to learn things, not to be taken seriously.

Re:Interesting sock question

All socks made-to-measure by little Italian chap who works in a garret above my tailor in Saville Row. So precise size and length is assured.

Re:Interesting sock question

Of course, silly me. Why not have him embroider your initials as mine does, then you could distinguish your socks from the kids' even in the dark?
