would you swap your boat

There you are, 'missed your open ended questions recently, welcome back.

Your boat theory is a little bit like women really, younger / smaller... older / bigger.

But your theory works well there too ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Only kidding really.

That's a daft theory IMHO, what if I want Bigger AND New /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A smaller newer one could mean less time 'off the water' whilst it's being repaired, more efficient engine (two engines in a bigger boat doubles everything), less maintenance costs, less running costs, covered by warranty, less time spent cleaning it inside and out, easier to take out on your own, less mooring fee's and easier to move about and get access to visiting marina's.

I actually think it is the other way round, and some people think size and a 'name' does matter /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Why do you think some people MUST drive round in an old Merc estate or old Land Rover Discovery when they could have a new efficient small car, it's because they are feeble image concious people that others just laugh at, especially when what they drive is something you disposed of years ago /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for money, well that's a nonsense as well as it all seems to cost the same initial cost e.g. a new 25ft er for £80k is the same cost as an old 80's Princess at £80k. It's down to the individual as to whether they need loads of room to sit and lounge around whilst waiting for the mechanic, or want to be out and about exploring and having fun, not sitting filling in loan application forms to pay for the cost of parts /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would agree with you when it comes to houses though, why have a mansion you rattle around in when something smaller would do, but it's personal choice at the end of the day /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you just want the boat as a holiday cottage fair enough it could be good value for money, or if you need the room due to the size of your family, but otherwise big and old does nothing for me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So are you now thinking of buying your own boat then? Will you go large or small and what are you looking at? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well Julie,

I swopped for a smaller newer one....and not for vanity. Running costs of a 30 ft twin Petrol were spiraling out of control. So I decided to get a single diesel. I looked at all the 28ft Single Diesel and thought "why not try something different"

I had always liked the idea of the Scandanavian built Hard Tops. However, having never owned one, we were concerned about living with it as it is a completely different design/layout/hull design to American sportsboats. Rather than jump in with both feet and spend £100k and then risk making a mistake we dipped our toes in at half that price.

So my fuel bills are now 10% of what they were, my mooring is half, my servicing is half, my cleaning time is cut by 35%, my DIY time is now 10% of what it was and my enjoyment factor 100%.

Before even with just a 30ft boat, it was soo much more hasle and we always fely it was only to be used for overnighting (as we had to carry so many jerry cans to it. With this smaller newer one we still overnight but it is so easy to use that today it will be a day boat.

So in answer to your question. Smaller newer boat equals smaller bills and more fun! Nowt to do with Image and 'showing off!....afterall, it is only 23ft /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Cheers

Paul

Hey Paul, I think we have found the ideal size as we are both having so much fun /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

With the imminent Middle East war and diesel price rises, I 'm glad I'm only running one super efficient diesel engine at the moment /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Makes a hell of a difference from my previous petrol gas guzzlers /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif But does make it fun to fill up and laugh at the diesel bill, I'm only paying 25% of what I was over the last few years with petrol /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are you out and about today? I'm off on the boat now, places to go people to see, and sea to explore /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Got passport just in case /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

One of my old dad's maxims was never buy a car with a smaller engine than the one you've got. I'm not sure this still holds true with the massive increases in efficiency and performance modern engines now achieve but I understand where he was coming from. For me, the same principles apply to boat size - downsize and you will always be missing the space and facilities. Mind you, we use ours very much more than most people (153 nights on-board last year and no - not on our home berth). We have never bought smaller - started at 16 foot and are now up to 15 metres. Wouldn't want anything bigger but then couldn't imagine going smaller, all for practical reasons, nothing to do with image.

[/ QUOTE ] There you go again. Why is it that you can rarely post without attempting to insult someone? All it does is to devalue whatever else you had to say. Grow up!

Excuse me, but surely the whole point of this thread is a dig at small new boat owners which is insulting, or am I missing something here? I don't see you leaping up and down about that! This is a very clear example of what is wrong with the forum IMHO.

I am just stating a fact which is true.

Image, image, image .......the biggest, fastest, coolest jobbie there is for me.

Now where could I get the coolest 56 sports cruiser around, hmmm, let me think! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep totally wrong, she didn't mention anything about the size of the owner only about the size of the boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorry just because it's your opinion doesn't make it true or a fact, in fact probably the complete opposite
Posts like your's imo do back up that statement tho /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

[/ QUOTE ] I certainly didn't see the question posed by PowerSkipper in that light. Why would she want to have a dig at small boat owners? So YES - you are missing something. I could probably provide a list but in this immediate context, its your failure to recognise your own (advanced) paranoia. You need to get out on your boat more.

Quote "you need to get out on your boat more"

I'm on it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It's the big old one in the corner, can't go anywhere though, it looks good I spent four months polishing it, but it's broken, I'm sitting here waiting for the mechanic, but I'm on the boat /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Oh dear. Now I see what others have been talking about. You have entensively edited this post of yours but have chosen to hide from the world the fact you have done so. I think my previous reference to your paranoia was spot on!
