Would you still get on?

A bus pulls up and the doors swing open. You pay before you realise that the driver is slurring and obviously not with it. The 5 other people at the bus stop recognise the driver is drunk, there is muttering but the first 5 get on.

Do you lose face and alight to watch the bus leave without you even though you have paid your fare, or do you think it's okay, he's a professional so it must be safe...?

of course it is hypothetical, it bears no relation at all to people voluntarily getting on a bus with a drunk driver, even though they may not have much experience of using buses, it isn't exactly rocket science that an inebriated driver is probably a bad thing.

You shouldn't assume that this thread is making any allegations about drunk drivers, it is more to do with making a personal decision about your own risks when you are in full possession of the facts. The drunkedness is a theoretical scenario, I don't wish to ruin Richard's afternoon.

Didn't Milgram try out something similar?

Yes, this is what I was wondering. It is very much the reason why I always say no to catching buses in company, if the driver is drunk and you refuse to get on then you are looked down on or mocked for not being brave enough to take the risk.

My feeling is, if you and the other 5 people get on the bus you are sheep and should maybe stop using buses.

Discretion is always the better part of valour, particularly if the weather forecast is looking dodgy and there's a risk of the driver losing control and having to be towed back to the depot by a breakdown truck....

Having stopped the traffic as I cosidered it a risk to drive under a load suspended bty a crane over the street and held up the queue in a supermarket complaining about bad service to the manager I reckon I would call the police. The problem would be stopping the bus moving off.In general people dont like to make a fuss.

Interesting, but you don't need to make a fuss, just pick up your tesco bags and get off the bus. You could of course tell the other passengers why you are leaving, you will never have to see them again.

I imagine if the driver with the nice shiny driver badge told you he was perfectly safe and he drove in this condition regularly you would find yourself with more difficult decision, a perfect stranger with a badge must know better than your own personal judgement no?

However - with the advantages of medical training you also consider that the driver might possibly have had a brain haemorrhage, so you call for an ambulance instead of calling for the police ...

Jesus. I'd check the fella was ok. He may have had a stroke, or be otherwise unwell.

Edit: Didn't read all the thread or see the above post before replying, but exactly that. I'd definitely presume medical problems before drink.
