You get an email, a job on Islay this Thursday you have to be back in Glasgow for a job on Saturday. You have a 23 foot boat under used this year in Greenock. Can you get there and back in time for both jobs (self employed no job no money). Or do you wimp out and take the ferry?

I am also self-employed but in a different area, this sort of things is always difficult, I try and balance loyalty to customers against losses to me. I this case I would give priority to a customer who has employed me in the past (assuming I got paid) and I would then tell the other one that I would like to do the job but I have a clash which means that I might not be able to do it on the day they want.

Take the ferry. Mixing a tight schedule with leisure boating is asking for trouble - that's when people take unnecessary risks.

If it is good conditions take the boat and leave now. There are plenty of places to bail out between here and there if weather turns against you.
