Would you buy a boat this way?

Quite by chance I spotted a link on YBW to a website advertising an Ovni 43 for sale, with this "sale procedure". http://aventuratrois.wordpress.com/sale-procedure/

Now aside from the fact that the minimum bid is higher than the prices of newer boats of the same model that I have seen advertised, why would anybody agree to bid on a boat through such a procedure, which does not even appear to allow for a survey, but instead seeks to put potential purchasers into a blind auction.

If I was the sort of person who was so wealthy that I could contemplate squandering 255,000 euros on a toy, I don't think I would take kindly to anyone telling me what to do.

Seems fair enough to me. Only going to entertain the top five to viewing/survey, not an indeterminate number of tyre kickers. If you're top five, plenty of opportunity to have a good look, withdraw or improve your offer, then an in-depth fine-toothcomb job, and you can withdraw without penalty, if you wish.

"which does not even appear to allow for a survey"

Err - howzabout the bit that reads: "The offerers maintaining their offers will be given the chance for another inspection/survey of the boat "

It does put the onus on punters knowing beforehand what an Ovni 43 offers, and who Jimmy Cornell is, but I suspect that 90% of prospective purchasers will have that knowledge.

I think it reads worse than it was meant to. Limiting viewers and asking for a deposit sounds reasonable if you want a sale to go ahead with limited hassle and a short time frame. I agree that it reads a bit woke-up-on-the-wrong-side-of-the-bed though.

It does sound a bit like the seller is doing us all a big favour giving us a chance to buy this boat.......Mind you 2009 was supposed to be a very good year for used boat sales....but not if you're paying in Euros!!

well i think this is because this is the boat from jimmy and the changes are high that lots of people just want to view (not buying) it to see with that boat he sailed the world...

so to put a kind of filter in place making it only available for real buyers looks valid to me...

please accept our apologies for the misleading phrasing. due to the popularity of the boat we expect more people just wanting to see the boat. please be sure that the sales process is intented to be fair for both parties. the announcement doest not represent mr. cornell's opinion.
