Took the dinghy ashore at The Rocks over the weekend and made the painter fast to one of the several anchors and chains that appear to be supporting the local mussel industry. Went for a walk and when we returned we found......another dinghy had also come ashore from a yacht and tied his painter to our dinghies handholds. This was despite the plethora of other firmly imbedded suitable objects.

Was firmly advised by swmbo not to cause a scene. Ha, bloody amateurs.

Ah the local interaction with dinghies is very different in these parts, one needs to understand..........

Several years ago whilst parked in the Tidemill, we took the dinghy down river for a swim at the Rocks and lunch at the Maybush, all very nice, except once at the Maybush the outboard died and I couldn't get it going again. Stay with me.....the dinghy was left tied with a very long warp at the beach with dozens of others, whilst we returned to Tidemill by taxi to sort outboard. We would pick up dinghy early in the morning as we passed and left the river......

0600 next day, warm and still, our (then) jaguar 27 putted down river, my partner helming, and would jig about whilst I swam ashore and retrieved dinghy (3metre inflatable)....
As I got to shore in the early hours and started sorting the myriad of lines out, I was hailed from the path...Aha! thought I, a public spirited member of the community challenging my apparent theft at this early hour...a sneak thief from the sea!!!

No.....my strange appearance and doings on the shore was not mentioned or questioned.....no, advice was sort from me, this body emerging from the cold river, as to where would be the best place to send a video of some dinghy racing......? As one would.............

I advised as best as I could, untangled the painter and towed it, swimming back out, to be picked up by my anxious partner inquiring as to whether the gentleman thought we were stealing something.......I could only wish it were so.......

At a certain well known marina on the Orwell a thief was hitching a boat up to his car when a member of staff came across him. Being a helpful fellow he helped the thief get his haul onto the towing hitch:-)

We had a similar experience this year at Waldringfield. Came ashore from one of Marks moorings at mid-tide-falling to walk the dog, so parked dinghy and outboard at tide level and tied on the chain with a hitch.

Came back 30 minutes later to find someone had tied their dinghy painter to the handle of my outboard!!!!!!!!!!! Its because their painter wasn't long enough to reach the chain and they didn't want to pull it up the beach.

Bloody cheek!
