if I fitted a chain drive to the alternator. Would like to go down the route of twin belts but it would mean machining a new drive for the 10ho sabb (Big chunk of metal and a lot of swarf) Motorcycle rear and gear box are easy to obtain and fit.Can easily make a guard out of alloy sheet. Would like the forums opinions please. Note max revs are about 1750 rpm. for the engine

Chain drive would be noisy, and require regular lubing, which is messy.

Belts are silent, and long lasting by comparision.

have to agree on the noise of a chain drive. Also you would a tensioner to stop the chain jumping off the cogs. What about bolting another pulley onto the front of the existing crankshaft pulley.

Many thanks for the advice. To answer one point, the "V" in the engine is the narrow "A" section, its original use was for a dynamo and now drives an 18 acr with a smart charger, the alt. has a small diameter pulley, I am finding the belt wear is excessive, even though alingment is +or _ a Nats thingy and thought that a chain might solve the problem. Many thanks for all your input. Pampas
