Would anyone want me as a crew?

First post on the forum but have been lurking for a while.
I noticed the number of people who sail single handed, sometimes due to lack of crew.
Currently sail / race dingies (inland) and have PB L2 as often man the safety boat but fancy trying some coastal sailing which I have zero experience of.
So would I be of any use to someone as crew?
On the plus side I'm very fit and agile (for my age) so leaping on/off boats as required not a problem. I dont drink so the beer stocks are safe. I have a basic undertsanding of what goes where etc and very good at following instructions (orders).
My weekends are pretty much free as SWMBO has her horses to keep her happy and not requiring my attention. Based centrally so south or east coast not a problem.

On the minus side I have zero experience of anything bigger than a RS 400

Thoughts welcome.

Welcome to come sailing, when the boat is back in the water and as long as your not one of those internet weirdos........

Zero experience is not a problem as long as you are receptive to instructions and continue to recognise your own limitations. Dont try to bullsit anybody by making out you have more experience or skills than you have - you will get caught out sooner or later and pish people off. Somebody did this to me, started arguing in front of a ship in mid-channel, and from then on I swore I would never take a stranger off shore again.

Be prepared to pull your weight, eg washing up, boat cleaning, etc.

Being a non-drinker is not a problem if the skipper is a tolerant and open-minded person. If anybody seriously says its an issue, you dont want to go sailing with them anyway !!!

Hope this helps

Everyone here was a newbie at some point - and remembers it. As long as you seek to make yourself useful when you can, and learn the basic stuff as you go along just like the rest of us, you'll be welcome - and welcomed back again. However, an unwillingness to share a beer or - more importantly, stand your round when the time comes - is something of an impediment to being asked back. Ask 'MoodyNick'..... :D

RS400 experience is good

Dinghy experience is more benefit to a yacht crew than something like summer cruising in the med. The dinghy will have taught you how to feel the wind in the sails and to anticipate and respond to gusts. I think you will find you are more competent than you give yourself credit for.

I and other skippers are often looking for extra crew and would certainly give someone like yourself a try.

Good luck. Maybe we'll look you up in the new year once the boat's back on the water.

Are you suggesting that non-drinkers do not enjoy going to the pub? I actually enjoy it more now that I don't drink, I get to watch my mates make fools of themselves. :D

Oh, and Hi Dave!

Hear hear.
I've recently become allergic to alcohol ( medical condition) and am amazed at my friends reactions.
Apparently I can now no longer have a laugh of an evening?
Although sometimes the pub makes it difficult with their lack of choice :(

A LURKER??!!! You'll go far on these forum(s) youmg.ish man:D

Pity you're not up north here, I'm always happy to take genuine sailing people for day sails, short cruises or even extended cruises depending on time-commitments.

Anybody out there near here - just south of the north pole........;)

Yes, 2 types of crew wanted in my mind:

1) Do as instructed and learn,
With dinghy sailing experience you are nearly over experienced at this.

2) Crew capable of standing watches, or trimming sails for racing fast sail changes etc.

There is probably as much demand for no 1 as there is no 2.

As others have said an approximate location would help....

Thanks for the welcome. :D
To answer some concerns.......
I do occasionally enjoy a pint of shandy. Going to pubs works for me, happy to stand my round and can understand alcoholese although I'm not a fluent speaker of it.
I'm based in Northampton but happy to travel to get some sailing in. Early starts are not an issue for me.
Jobs around the boat (inc washing up and making the tea) not a problem. Might also help if I mention that I know one end of a spanner from the other, can weld, spray etc. I like fixing things ;)
As for internet weirdo, not sure I can answer that. Please define normal as a base reference. :p
Dont smoke now but did so back in my long past.
I never argue with the captain.
Think that answers all the questions.
I would post some pics of recent(ish) projects to validate my spanner weilding credentials but photobucket seems to be on strike.
