All these posts about good and bad marinas leads me to the awful conclusion that most people only travel from marina to marina.
What about anchorages..they're free, usually leave you at peace to commune with nature and very, very much prettier than any marina.
During the sailing season (for me in retirement about 150/365 nights) I spend 4 at anchor for every one in a marina and and like to see others listing a few of the anchorages, they've enjoyed:

Here are 20 of my most enjoyed, to kick off with:-

1. Bardsey 52N45 04W48
2. Abersoch 52N49 04W29
3. Studland 50N39 04W57
4. St Just in Roseland 52N11 05N02
5. Coveen 49N53 06W20
6. R de Aulne 48N17 04W167.
7. R Odet 47N53 04W07
8. R Bélon 47N49 03W43
9. Doelan 47N46 03W37
10. Porth Kerel 47N18 03W12
11. Ours de Vielles 46N41 02W19
12. Ile d'Aix 46N00 01W10 DRYS
13. Le Fier d'Ars 46N13 01W29 DRYS
14. Ria de Ribasdella 43N29 05W00
15. Ria de Cediera 43N40 08W04
16. Lage 43N13 09W00
17. Camarinas 43N08 09W10
18. Muros 42N47 09W03
19. Rias de Arosa & Pontevedra with about 6
20. Cascais 38N42 09W25

Great to hear of wonderful anchorages - we've not used a marina yet (OK, we've not had the boat long...) but I can see us favouring anchoring over marina-ing many times. Hopefully as we build our experience we'll be able to reciprocate with some lovely suggestions too.

By the way - any good suggestions for anchorages around the Essex rivers (Crouch, Roach, etc.), as we're pottering off up there from the Medway for a week in a couple of weeks..?

Cheers!

Are there two Studlands or do you need a new GPS Charles? :0)

Agree with yours for UK/S Britanny but would add:-

Alderney
Sark, various
Isle Chausey
Port Blanc - North Britanny
Sept Isles - North Britanny
Camaret
Anse De Trez - S Britanny (Benodet)
Isle De Glenan - S Brittany (umpteen separate anchorages)
Belle Isle - S Britanny Ster Wen
Belle Isle - Ster Vras
Belle Isle - Goulphar
Belle Isle - Port Yorc'h
Isle De Houat - Treac'h Er Salus
Isle De Houat - Treac'h Er Gouret
Isle De Houat - Treac'h Er Beniguet
Isle De Hoedic
Isle De Yeu - Anse De Vielles

If you just cruise from Marina to Marina you miss the best parts IMHO as well as sending the cruise budget sky high.

Our home berth is a marina, away on our main hols we spend 4or 5 nights out, sometimes more, before heading in to refill the fridge, batteries, water tanks etc and to have a meal ashore. We have one friend who goes one better and can do all of the above in 2 hours whilst the French HM is at lunch....

Kilkerr, Plenty of sheltered moorings in the R. Blackwater, R, Colne, but take notice of what the tide is doing, cos that old water it comes and goes...if you want to take advantage, there's a pontoon outside Wivenhoe S.C.(free) but you will sit in soft mud at LW. Have a ood week.

As I went down your list Charles I found myself getting more and more green eyed. I will have to organise my life better and try some of those further south!

Up the River, just on the bend.

I've spent many a peaceful night beyond the 'drying line' on the Dart, in Salcombe and up the Tamar above Cargreen.

Theres usualy a pool to be found on a sharp bend.

Re: Up the River, just on the bend.

Used to enjoy going up the river on the tide to Cotehele - out of season the NT used to turn a blind eye to spending a night alongside the quay there.

the other good anchorage was the Bag in Salcombe. I once committed the solecism of leaving the Bag under sail, on the ebb, losing all wind just downstream of the 2 lakes and the ferry and drifting sideways to become wedged on "Hoshi's" bowsprit.
