I know it is a GPS! (and it works).

But I have no manual, from my fiddling around all I can seem to do is get numbers to plot on a chart (although their do seem to be other functions I think this is basically "it")

As this thing is fixed above the chart table it is not a lot of use, especially as I have 2 hand held GPS units (one on boat power) that are more useful AND I can use them at the helm. In any case the plan has always been to buy a cheap (ish) chartplotter that I can use both on the helm and detach for safe keeping / use at the chart table. So my plan is to ditch it (stick it on E-bay?) and use the space.

However, I may revise my plans if someone says "Oh, it can also do XY & Z" - but I suspect not /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Any ideas folks?

Also as this is "Plumbed in" to an external aerial can this be used for a new set up, ie has the aerial and cable connections remained the same over the last 10/15 years whilst the GPS units themsleves have been upgraded or has both ends of the set up changed??

Hopefully images to follow!

I've got one of these on my boat as a back-up to the main GPS/plotter, on a separate supply and as a stand-alone.

It can do more than you have been able to find out about so far. You can input waypoints and routes, and it will give you the normal data you would expect to find on any other gps. It is a 6 channel gps, and for its age, very stable.

It is also waterproof, so long as the plugs are in the dry. Mine is sealed on the aft end of the cabin, with the plugs inside. Its must be, as it has been out in all winds and weather for over 3 years on this present boat - and outside on another boat before.

When I next go to the boat, I will get the manual, copy it, and let you have a copy - if you want it. It may not be until the end of the month when we lay-up.

Keep it.

Well, you need something to give you the wherewithall to plot points on the chart and numbers at the chart table that don't require a 3rd hand to hold a handheld GPS are useful - also it doesn't need AA batteries. I'd hold onto it and, if you're lucky, you may even have an NMEA output to make your DSC radio and/or EPIRB happy.

mmmmm, I didn't realise it was waterproof. Cheers for the offer on a copy of the manual. Being a bit of a luddite when it come to technology no great surprise that I have not found everything it does! (took me an hour or so to get the image from my new Camera Phone into the PC /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif, still an upgrade of phone after 7/8 years isn't splashing out too much and I will admit that I now realise that I should have upgraded phone a long time ago!, but I have never been one for chasing technology when the older version works!).

Will drop you a PM.

You will find that it is mounted by two bolts through the panel, with nuts on the bolts - or screws into the back of the GPS (can't quite remember which). If you decide to drop it forward, you will see a waterproof seal around the electrical sockets area.

Have replied to your PM.

regards,
Philip

Not familiar with that GPS, but it is always very important to carry a back up GPS reguardless how primitive it is.

[/ QUOTE ]I would have thought it more important to carry paper charts and know how to use them when the GPS fails! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Keep It

If I understand you correctly;

It provides you with your position (Lat/Long) which you can then plot on a chart.

Brilliant. What more do you need ?

(OK - waypoints, cross track error, etc.) Keep it. It works. It gives you your position. Sound back up to any other system.

I have an old Philips Decca Navigator (similar looking to yours) on board. I also had one on our previous boat.

I elected not to remove them so as not to uncover holes behind them. They do however provide one useful function - they have a battery voltmeter built in ;o)

At least yours can give a postition - no hope of that from the ol' Decca units anymore /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hi

I have one of these on our Sigma, Been using it for the last three years!

I think they're great! I use the GPS, the Sailplanner mode, Navigator mode. The screen is large, easy to read, and easy to 'navigate' around the menue.

All the information you need is there, SOG,COG, ETA,POSITION,W/POINTS,HEADING,HEADING TO NEXT W/POINT, all you ever need is in this box of tricks.

IF you are going to get rid of it and replace it with a colour 'ding' 'dong' 'I claim to do everything you need plotter', then please get in touch, I'll take it off your hands!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Un-cluttered screen, just info you readily need.

Cheers Folks, I wasn't expecting quite so positive a reponse (it WAS going in a skip......or at least the loft - pretty much the same thing!)

Will start reading the manual!
