Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

I have just been volunteered for escort duties.
There is a bloke who has just bought a 1936 ex navel (pinnacle???)
It's a kind of 26ft (ish) Dunkerque little ship, it's not been started for 6 years has several broken ribs, a funny gearbox arrangement that has a clutch like a car (except it doesn't work, so you have to switch off engine to go fwd-rev or rev-fwd)
It has sprung a couple of planks, they have been plywooded over to keep wet stuff out.
Now this boat will do 6knts and he requires chaparoning to Portsmouth where it is going to be lifted for full refurbishment.
I have agreed to shadow him.
Am I mad??
Is he??
(actually, he's got the engine running , and it sounds really sweet)
Watch this space!!

If anyone sees me doing 6knts,
I AIN'T BROKE DOWN, RIGHT!!!!!

It's not dissimilar to the one in MBM this month.

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

How far is it going.Once underway any movement may cause few more planks to move allowing mud n gunge which is keeping boat water tight to drop out.
Best way to accompany this boat could be sitting in cab of lorry transporting it.
Need a couple of decent and known to work pumps to hand if the old girl is being moved any distance over open water.IMHO.

B.....y hell where did all that wash come from.
Er looks like a B....m to me.

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Yes any rough weather will open the seams right up .
I had an ex life boat clinker hull.
I had to keep a pump going virtually none stop on a run from Pin mill to Fosdyke , still if the boat has been used it will help .
So are you following along in your boat cos it's painfully slow and the wrong end of the year so expect fun re weather .
BUT GREAT FUN
Cheers

I want a big steel ex trawler or tug v, cheap or swap for tug

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Taking it from our boatyard on the Hamble, to Portmouth. He's waiting for calm sea
(sensible) His main concern is it breaking down. He is bracing broken ribs for journey. We are taking safety gear such as-
pumps/extra fire extinguishers/huge floatation fenders etc:in addition to normal VHF flares etc:
Anything else ?

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Have distinct feeling that waiting for arrival of low loader may be preferable to waiting for calm sea !
I often set out with various bits and pieces not working but the thought of leaving a safe haven with doubts about the vessels basic seaworthiness causes me real concern. Are you sure you really want to do this? Just cos he's a splice or two short of a mooring line doesnt mean you need to be!
Dare I ask about surveyors report and insurance cover........./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Yes a tarpaulin one of those cheap ones.
So if the in take of water gets really bad you could slide and work it under the hull to slow the ingress of water forming a skin,( handy way of re floating sunk hulls!! )
Cheers

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

I liked that one, "A splice or two short of a mooring warp" gave me quite a chuckle that one!

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Agree about lorry, but not sure of his finances. Think he may have spent it all on boat. I like the tarp idea, I've heard of something similar. I will suggest that one to him.
I think he would undertake this journey anyway. I would be happier to know he was in the company of another boat, rather than alone.

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Tarp good idea as a second skin (practice on fitting it, or seriously consider it a requirement for the journey).
Pumps good, but make sure thay are manual and of plenty capacity with little chance of clogging.

More important, agree about liabilities and abandonment procedures and how / what to do, in case the worst happens, well in advance of journey. It is a real pig to try to tow a partly, or even fully submerged boat, irrespective of size, not to mention strain on your boat. The unfortiunate ones I have seen have been tied to rescue vessel for alongside towing, having rescue vessel "holding" the boat afloat higher in the water than it would naturally. Can your boat, the esort vessel, support that kind of operation ?

Better still, if you feel he need to take these precautions (and buy the above kit), then there must be some real concern about the seaworthiness of the other vessel and as such you should seriously consider land transportation. (If she is being re-furbished, there must be some financial flexibilities somewhere as it needs cash to lift her out of the water to start with). Otherwise good luck...

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Don't forget the digi camera.

Love to see the photo's of the helicopter hovering over the boat making the rescue. Sure B1'll host 'em for you.

Re: Wot \'ave I let myself in for??

Take an Axe with you...... 2 reasons, firstly to chop through the tow line when the old tub starts to drag you under with it , and secondly once dragged onto the beach at Gillkicker you can chop it up, set fire to it and let off some fireworks, making like it was all meant to happen.
