Following on from another thread, what is considered to be the worst/most dangerous bar or entrance in the UK. I am well acquainted with the delights of the likes of Carnarfon, Aberdovey, Barmouth and to a lesser extent some of the south coast nasties, but I have mostly managed to avoid really bad conditions in those sort of places.
It would be interesting to list the top ((say) 10 entrances/bars in descending order of evilness. It may well be that some of these generally thought of as very dangerous are more perceived as dangerous (over rated) rather than actually dangerous and others less well known (generally under rated) are actually more dangerous. What do people think?

No first hand experience, but most dangerous proably Newport IoW, followed by the one just beside Ocean Village :D

The difficulty is you tend not to mess with those sort of places and get the timing and weather normally spot on. I have found Strangford like a mill pond and taken a real pasting at the (relatively) benign Carlingford entrance!

It used to be a dodgy business getting into the bar of the Ferry Boat at Fambridge until somebody nailed a bit of rubber tyre onto the low beam across the doorway. That's one of the worst bar entrances I've encountered

Doom Bar? Never done it but looked bad on TV, takes a full oceanic swell on there.

Caernarfon Bar is potentially the worst I've done but never done it in bad conditions (that's what your're supposed to do right?)

Liverpool Bar can be extremely bad with lots of tide and wind against. There's probably no risk of grounding but the steepness and height of waves in relatively moderate conditions is quite bad.

Done it twice, (in and then out) middling but not serious as the later straight overnight to Milford Haven

Twice again, both in. Daylight first time, yacht ahead lost its towed tender. Then solo at night (calm) Glad I dloaded and inputted the current channel!

Done a few times now. Last time going in well to the outside of the fairway, I was shocked when a passing inbound tanker sucked the water off the training wall and exposed it-far too close for comfort

I've heard bad things about Porthmadog bar, but I haven't yet been there. I imagine that the entrance to the Dee (the one with Kirkcudbright on it) would be a bit technical in a southerly gale.

Why limit it to the UK what about extending to France and Northern Europe? That may be more interesting for some readers to cover areas they are likely to sail? Just a suggestion.

Caernarfon deserves its reputation. Nasty especially as you can be flushed out of a flat calm Strait and find a nasty breaking swell the remnants of the previous days storm with limited or no chance of turning round with a plan B in mind.
I fear Portmadog (shallow for much longer) and Aberystwyth which are just as untenable in a bit of a SW wind.
We seem to have more than our fair share of hazards around here and Tidal overfalls at Bardsey,South Stack Skerries Carmel and Lynas tend to concentrate the mind.
I still get a twitchy bum each time we push through by the Bridges..
But this is soon forgotten when you salute Lord Nelsons statue and remember what he said about circumnavigation of our little island.

River Villaine gets interesting reports in swell conditions especially since it has silted up due to the Barrage at Arzal.
