Whilst I think I know what this is the question is how do you get rid of it?

Mate of mine is buying a boat from Brighton and it was lifted over the weekend, he was told to use a brick cleaner but I wondered if anyone had a better way. Im told not to scrape them as it scratches plastic or metal surfaces.

Thanks

Phill

You could try that stuff for de-scaling kettles (forget what it's called). It's designed to disolve the limescale without attacking the metal, so shouldn't attack your outdrive - but I suggest you try it on a small area first, just in case!

If you want to dissolve your outdrive, it probably would.

Those "worms", or rather their calcium carbonate based protective "shells" are attached to the paint, hydrochloric acid ( brick acid) does work and doesn't affect the paint. if the paint is damaged so there's bare metal then you're going to have to paint it anyhow (with something that doesn't provide such an attrative home to the worms)

I once cleaned a hob top with Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner and it took the paint off. I don't know what the paint was but it must have been a strong high temperature enamel.
Vinegar is good at getting rid of limescale ie calcium carbonate. Scraping with wood looks good then rubber gloves, Scotchbrite pad and vinegar and a few hours scrubbing - easy!
