World's ugliest ship parks in Southampton

Do you expect an HGV to be elegant? Or a crane? Or a digger? They are tools, nothing more.

Must be delivering all the French cars.... ;)

Nope - usually loading Minis, Range Rovers, Rolls Royces, and heavy earthmoving equipment. Probably other things as well, and I assume they don't arrive empty, but those are what I notice driving onto them whenever I sail past.

I wonder what happens when a vessel of that size, whose construction is probably over 99% steel, gets hit by lightning?

Dan,

was once in an electrical storm mid Channel and saw a ship about 1/2 mile away get a direct hit by forked lightning; as far as I know no ill effects, meanwhile it was hitting the sea all around us, the crew said " It's just a matter of time isn't it ?! " so we blew up the inflatable and towed it behind - needless to say we didn't get hit but I wasn't disappointed.

Dougal,

is that serious ? I mentioned this was a reported snag with strikes and had a load of unbelieving loudmouths asking for proof, when I'd read up on it years before - as they should have...

It can happen if the bonding is carp. From the two cases I've seen the heat generated distorts metals causing the rivets to actually pop out but there was also vapourisation of rivets and surrounding areas in places. This was Dural and Monel of course, rather than steel.

Rolls Royces ? That ship could take the entire production line of RR's for two years, in one trip.

grumpy o g ,

understood and I'm familiar with Dural & Monel; I hope some people are reading this who jumped on me for suggesting skin fittings can be blown out by lightning, far too uncomfortable a thought to be real...
