Working with bungee (shock) cord?

we use it all the time, a job to knot, the fisherman's knot with each part overhand round the other is sound to join ends. Other wise just lots of knots and haul really tight or wire crimps.

[1] Join it to itself in a loop

Racking seizing.

[2] Fasten it to a flat U-shaped fitting

Not sure I fully understand the shape of the fitting, but probably also a loop with a racking seizing.

[3] Fasten it into the coiled fitting on a bungee hook

Simple overhand knot, it's what they're designed for. But pull very very tight before using or the knot will eventually undo.

1. I've formed loops by stitching through, sometimes using hot-melt glue as well, and then covering with heat-shrink. Also used 2-3 small cable ties, very quick and simple, with or without heat-shrink over the top. Not as pleasing to the eye as whipping, but strong and durable - I've some loops holding down a tarp that have been outside for 10 months now, and are looking fine.

2. Sorry, can't visualise your flat u-shaped fitting!

3. Overhand knot, or figure-of-eight, or any stopper knot that holds the bungee in place. As Pete said above, pull very, very tight. Some bungee seems slippier than other, you might have to suck it and see.

Use some copper tubing as a ferule (8, 10, 12. 15 mm depending on the shock cord diameter). . Compress it to make it oval, insert cord, compress in a vice and use a blunt punch so secure the lot. Works very well.

All of thse fittings would be good witha knot to hold the bungee in. Just remember that any fitting on the end of a bungee can end up flying through the air after releasing to cause injury. Those steel hooks as on cheap bungees sold assembled are deadly. There was a case here some years back where a youth was employed collecting super market trolleys. He used a bungee to hold the trolleys together while wheeling them. The bungee came unhooked the hook on the end flew around and took out his jugular and he died. So soft smooth plastic Ok steel hooks no. good luck olewill

You can buy bits of ss wire shaped a bit like a staple, to crimp bungee.
Any wire might do...
Then cover with glue lined heat shrink.

Bungee knots always end up looking messy. It is one of the rare places where I think a dunk in "dip it and whip it" is useful. Tie the knot and then dip it. Like the heat shrink idea above.

As a long time bodger bungee and gaffer tape are close to my heart! these guys are good for all things bungee http://www.bouncingrabbit.co.uk/page4.htm
The plastic self assembly fittings seem to do what they say on the tin, never had one fail, but if in doubt tie a simple knot and pull it tight, really tight - it'll never come undone!
I bought half a dozen of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Auto-locking-Adjustable-Heavy-Duty-Plastic-Hooks-8-10mm-Bungee-Shock-Cord-/330889118488?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Camping_Accessories&var=&hash=item7dc3c83da5
Haven't used them yet though! :)
