Thanks to all who replied to my previous post on the livaboard forum. I'm posting this here as well as it may be more appropriate to the PBO experts...

I was thinking to use Bluewater Algarve for major electronics and watermaker installation. Paul Mallett, the British owner seems to know his stuff.

What are the views of the forum with regard to getting a bonafide company as opposed to a "man-with-a-van" to do major installation work?

My feeling is that at-least with a company known to the manufacturer you would not have a problem with any future warantee work, where as if installed by a "jobber" the manufacturer might not want to know, hiding behind "incorrect installation".

Obviously it will be more expensive to get a company to do the work as they have legitimate overheads but with regard to the above - it might work out cheaper and less hassle in the long run?

Am I being paranoid - but I'm concerened about the number of "individuals" offering out their services for major work on boats. Are they legal, would I get in trouble with the authorities if it was found out that they were not? What if their level of workmanship is not up to standard and what if one of them accidentally sank or set fire to my boat?

All views appreciated.

Hi Emma,
IMHO possibly paranoid.
Today, most electronic kit can be installed by an amateur and it's not really your worry is someone overseas has a work visa or not.
A pro will do it quicker and possibly neater - but as you say they will cost more.
IMHO it woul be unlikely anyone could install kit in such a way it's warrantly may be invalidated - but if you are worried then stick on the safe side and simply pay the extra £'s.
Cheers
JOHN
