Time to replace the main halyard... Its boggy standard multiplat at the mo, but I feel the need to get a bit more "feel" in the luff for some tuning.

I ask the panel..

Is Dynema worth the dosh, or will a new multiplat feel better anyway?

also, does anybody know a good (ie cheap!) ropemonger that will do a good eyesplice too? (i know, i should do it, but i'm a bit rubbish with anything more than 3 strands!!)

Dyneema is great - its lighter and doesn't have the same give as multibraid rope. You do not want multiplat - thats for mooring/anchor/towing.

However, dyneema is much more expensive, so try a search round the on-line chandleries and get a feel for prices per metre. Then you could have a look at ebay - you may well find sellers like outdoorescape offering a hank at a very good price. All sources will offer a spliceing service at reasonable cost.

Vectran is great and the clear favourite for performance (racing), but a long lasting, reliable cruising solution remains a wire halyard with rope tail (braid on braid or the stronger and more expensive 16 plait). Get a rigger to do the splice, its tricky and can be painful

Thanks James, I was thinking about that, but a little worried about the masthead sheave (sp?).
Pinny, I meant that we use 16 Plait at the mo, not multibraid, sorry.

I guess I can see the benefit of going from 16 Plait to Dyneema, but having looked about, i can see that Vectran is for the serious dudes, and at basically £250 for one bit of string is a bit rich for my pocket.
Ho Hum... I guess i should either bite the bullet or stop blummin whinging.

thanks again chaps

take a look in the offcut bins at local yards / riggers - since the First Class 8 isn't too big you may find a good price on a reel end.

Don't know where you're based but I saw good lengths of dyneema and spectra in the offcuts bin at Foxes Rigging, Ipswich. I guess since Oysters get so big these days, offcuts might suit your average 40 footer!

(FC8's a great boat BTW, had lots of fun racing them in my younger days)
