I have a Bavaria yacht, vintage 2000, with the 'dark' wood interior.

I am making a small supplementary instrument/switch panel and thought the best start point for the wood would be sapele (I couldn't get mahogany). However, I am having trouble matching the colour to the original woodwork and am not sure what 'finish' to apply (matt/satin varnish, proprietary wood finish etc).

The bare sapele is a bit 'pink' so I have tried Colron "Deep Mahogany" stain. This is closer but still not 'chestnut-brown' enough.

Can anyone suggest a better colour match and a suitable finish?

Colron stains are "mixable"if you have the time, patience, a few offcuts of your chosen timber and some accurate measuring spoons [use the kitchen set, she won't mind]. Ebony is a good general darkener.

I have used Colron Peruvian Mahogany Liquid Beeswax on Sapele and it looks very nice. Darkens the wood and makes the touch like stroking a cat - but perhaps too much of a reddish tint for you?

As it's going to be incredibly difficult to match, and will age differently anyway, I think I'd go for a contrasting wood unstained or even painted.

You could try van Dyke crystals. These are dissolved in water and applied to the wood. It is very easy to adjust the colour to what you want by making a stronger or weaker solution. it's best to experiment on a piece of spare timber until you get the result you want.
