Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could give me a brief history lesson on wooden Turkish boats. Just perusing around and dreaming of 100ft Schooners and the like, it seems as though a lot of these huge wooden yachts are built in Turkey.

Is it merely a cost of labour issue, since wooden boats are labour intensive, or is there a particularly interesting story behind Turkish boat building?

Cheers, n.

yes,
actually there is a history behind traditional turkish wooden boats. Those built in blacksea with sweet chestnut were called "cektirme", while the scooners built in the aegean part are called "gulet" and "tirhandil" ,depending on their hull shape. Many boats are still being built for orders from europe.
you may google "turkish gulets" or "tirhandil" for forther info.
kind regards

cenk
