Wooden Tiller Weather Protection

Varnish is so much yesterday's technology. Get withit, and use one of the breathable woodstains.
I have had excellent results using Sadolin Quick Drying (Natural). Dry in minutes, clean brush with water. What's not to like?

I like gravy on my Sunday roast. I like varnish on my wood.

You have spent out for a top notch tiller, treat it with respect and you will have a friend for life.

I'll eat my hat if it's real mahogany - maybe utile. Can't see from the picture what the lighter wood is. Wouldn't normally laminate ash with the mahogany substitutes as they move so differently that the lamination would be liable to fail.

You can't go wrong if you seal it with varnish. (Tip for conventional varnishing - put the brush in a poly bag in the freezer between coats to save cleaning it. Won't work for two pot.) Remember to thin the first couple of coats.

Unless you know what wood it is DO NOT be tempted by the discussion of breathable coatings. They are only suitable for durable woods. Ash, favoured as tiller material for its bendy strength is not durable. It will rot if you do not seal it against the elements. Utile has middling durability and would be better sealed.
