Hi. We have two wooden post type cleats at the stern. They are square wood with the two metal pieces out the side. Not sure what the correct name is for them - apologies.

Anyway, due to an accident in a lock with a line , one was badly damaged - essentially sheared across just above deck level. It looks to have had some damage in the past making it susceptible to this.

What would be the best way to go about a repair of this?

You'll have to replace the whole length of the bollard. It will probably be bolted to a deck beam and a stringer. You'd better hope and pray that the builder didn't glue it in place as well, as that will really give you a job of work. These bollards are usually the corners of the cockpit coaming and the coaming is naturally attached to them. Obviously you will fashion its replacement from a length of strong hardwood like oak.
Peter.

So checking this in the daylight, the wood was rotten. Needed to be replaced anyway. Better to find out now than when relying on it moored up in some harbour.......
