We are fixing new rubbing strokes to our Elizabethan 23. The wood will be bolted to the hull and the bolt holes plugged with plugs of the same wood. My question is, what glue to use for the plugs? I know that the advice often given is to use varnish so that plugs can easily be removed but we intend to use an oil (similar to but not Woodskin). Epoxy is possible but a bit over the top. What about waterproof/weather resistant wood adhesive from B&Q or similar?

All depends how snug your plugs will be. If they are tapered and go in with the tap of a hammer, then cascamite or outdoor 'waterproof' white woodglue, or polyurethane will be fine.

If they're only a 'sliding' fit, then something gap-filling like epoxy will be needed to seal them in, but the foaming of polyurethane will leave 'air holes' around them and can also blow the plugs out as it dries.

Araldite or other epoxy works for me.
If the plug is quite thin, araldite will stick it to the screw as well as the edges of the hole, which is sometimes useful when my woodwork doesn't quite go as I'd hoped...
